Howard Evans (RGC 1404 Programme Notes)

Once again we welcome the only North Walian club in the Principality Premiership and especially welcome is their former Wales international wing Mark Jones, who must be congratulated on his record since becoming the team’s coach.

They have a fast, fit side who topped the opening part of the season in the West (even if they are in the North!) with a record of 11 wins, 2 losses (away to Llandovery and Carmarthen Quins) and a draw at Swansea.

Jacob Botica topped the scorers with 142 points but to me, the star turn and the best centre I have seen in Premiership rugby is Tom Hughes, who ran in 12 tries, while Dion Jones, amazingly not a Scarlet, and Iolo Evans are proving great signings and the pack is certainly no pushover.

They have begun the second half of the season with a bang, scoring 183 points in just four games, including 25 tries. They opened with a 47-14 win over Bridgend and then 66-3 against Neath. Carmarthen Quins made RGC fight for a 20-20 draw, but though Swansea got to 21 points first, they did not add to that as RGC reached 50.

It must be admitted that today RGC play their first away match since December 1 however, though they did lose at Ebbw Vale in January’s Cup match by 16-14.

Everyone at Aberavon wish both Stef Andrews (broken ankle) and Joe Gage (recovering from knee surgery) well, while personally I am glad to see David Pritchard back with his first league try of the season.

We have a new strong young tight-head in Chris Davies from Penclawdd and two-try Trebanos scrum half Iwan Temblett.

Finally, congratulations to Afon Bagshaw (RGC) and the Aberavon pair of “Magic” Mike Wilson and Jacob Flynn on playing for the Wales Sevens side in Las Vegas.
