Aberavon RFC are hugely saddened to hear of the passing of one of our club’s true legends, Billy Mainwaring.
Capped six times by Wales in 1967/1968 Billy played over 700 games for the club in 18 seasons having joined from Taibach RFC where he was held in similar high esteem as at Aberavon.
Billy was in many ways the embodiment of the club in the 60’s and 70’s – uncompromising and fearsome on the field but a real gentleman off it.
The stories of Billy (always supported by his parents Bryn and Evelyn) are legendary at the club and he will be fondly remembered as one of the greatest players to have ever pulled on the red and black jersey.
Billy was born in 1941 and passed away at home yesterday after a long illness fought with typical bravery and dignity aged 78.
He will be sadly missed as a huge character in the town and particularly at Aberavon where we were privileged to have him as part of our club for nearly 60 years.
Our sympathies go out to his wife Eirwyn, his family and many friends.
