Lee Purnell Leaves

Experienced dynamic flanker Purnell leaves Aberavon Rugby Club.

Purnell made his first appearance for Aberavon in 2012 against Tata Steel and has gone on to play for the club 187 times.

Every pack needs a ‘dog’ and Lee is certainly one. He is a rugged forward who has settled splendidly with the Wizards and is a favourite of almost every supporter in the club as he gives 100% in every game he plays in and has led the side on several occasions.

His previous clubs have included Gilfach Goch (alongside his elder brother), Bedwas and Tonmawr.

He won the awards of Player of the Year and Players Player in 2018. A whole-hearted performer.

However, Lee has decided to end his playing career at Aberavon to take an opportunity in a coaching role.

Jason Hyatt commented.

“I would like to thank Lee for his outstanding contribution at Aberavon. Lee has a huge heart and has always given 100% in practice sessions and matches.

I have watched Lee develop into a great warrior and I wish him the very best of luck in his first coaching role.”

Lee Purnell added.

“I absolutely loved my time with Aberavon, it’s a special club and cannot thank them enough for everything the club and Andrew has done for me over the years.

I just feel the time is right for a new challenge.”
