Allan Martin was a fixture in the power-house of the Wales pack for the best part of nine years, scoring 25 points. Toured with the Lions to New Zealand and Fiji in 1977 then to South Africa in 1980. ‘Panther’ as he is known played in well over 500 matches for Aberavon, setting a club record of 285 points in 1973-74 and toured with Wales to Canada (1973); Japan and Hong Kong (1975) and Australia (1978). Educated at Sandfields Comprehensive School. He skippered Aberavon in 1981-82, also playing against the New Zealand Maoris in 1982. He moved next to Penarth, but returned to Aberavon in 1986-87 and coached them in 1988-89, then left after a dispute in season 1989-90. He won the 1966 Wales und-20 shot (14.84 metres) and discus (40.34 metres) and both again in 1967 with 14.93 metres and 44.28 metres. His son, Steve, was a fine lock forward with Neath.
