Ray Giles, born in 1961, was a strong hard-working half back who played in two spells at Aberavon, starting in 1980-87 and then from 1990-92, having switched to Cardiff from 1988-90. It was from Aberavon that he gained his caps and he also led Wales B to Italy in 1986; played a non-cap match against Japan in 1983 (scoring a try); captained Wales B against Australia in 1981; toured with Wales to Spain in 1983 and he was also a replacement for West Wales against Australia in 1981. He skippered Aberavon in 1985-86, 1986-87, 1987-88 (part) and 1990-91 and played for them against the New Zealand Maoris in 1982. He made a debut for the Barbarians against the East Midlands at Northampton in 1987 and in 1988 he played for the Barbarians against Newport as a replacement. He briefly coached Aberavon in 1991-92 before returning in 1992 to his first senior club, Kenfig Hill.
