Richie Davies was a splendid flanker who went on to be an Aberavon club coach. He was a hard-tackling hunter of opposing backs, but off the field a charming man, who is still in good condition. He could play in any of the back three positions of the pack, most often with his friend Ogwen Alexander. He captained Aberavon in 1975-76 and was the Player of the Year in 1973. He gained a Wales ‘B’ cap in an outstanding 24-6 win over France ‘B’ at Pontypool on 17 November 1976. His back-row colleagues that day were Clive Burgess and Jeff Squire, who both went on to win full caps. He was in the Aberavon side soon after Mike Nicholas had turned professional and was in the ‘Wizards’ party that ‘toured’ Jersey in 1973, Barbados in 1977 and Canada in 1981. In 1985-86 and 1986-87 he was head coach of Aberavon before work commitments forced him to finish.
