The 1974 final saw Llanelli defeat Aberavon by 12-10 at Cardiff.
The only try of the game came after three minutes when Shell and Bevan combined to send Steve Roper over and with a Martin penalty it was 7-6 to the ‘Wizards’ at half-time. Then Kim Davies had to move to scrum half as Shell received stitches.
“That was when we lost it,” said Howells. “I am convinced that though we were on their line, if Clive had been on the field we would have scored.”
Another Martin penalty and a third from Llanelli wing Andy Hill saw Aberavon lead 10-9, but Hill’s fourth penalty won it for the ‘Scarlets’.

The losing Aberavon side was: – Kim Davies; Steve Roper, Malcolm Swain, Ian Hall, Alan Rees; John Bevan, Clive Shell; Clive Williams, Morton Howells (capt), Jim Owen, Billy Mainwaring, Allan Martin, Richie Davies, Keith Evans, Ogwyn Alexander.
